I wish to thank Mr John Ashford for permitting me to use his wonderful painting "Midnight Mango"

I remember sneaking down the stairs
for mangos at midnight
While mama thought I was in my bed
sleeping all snug and tight

Mango juice running down my arms
and off the tip of my chin
No time to stop and wipe it off
they wouldn't have tasted good then

Ice cold beauties from tropical lands
thoughts running through my head
Of sitting upon sunswept beaches
instead of at home in my bed

This was the game I used to play
of waiting till dark was around
Then sneaking past mama's doorway
and downstairs without a sound

I used to huddle in the kitchen
under the light of the moon
And partake of my nightly ritual
I remember it started one June

The first time I held a mango
the aroma, it hit my nose
The bite that started my passion
sent shivers down to my toes

Now twenty plus years have passed by
and my passion for mangos still lives
I guess I am just a child at heart
with fond memories I have as a kid

Although I don't have to sneak to eat
these beauties that I adore
I still let the juice run down my arms
off my chin and onto the floor

So if you want to fall in love
head over heels and out of your mind
Just take a bite of a mango
go ahead give it a try just one time

It will take you back to being a child
this magic in your hand
So young and innocent and wild
where a Princess ruled the land

"Between the dark and the daylight,
When the night is beginning to lower,
Comes a pause in the day's occupations
That is known as the children's hour"

Awwwwww mangos.....I too have wonderful memories of mangos as a child. I remember eating them with my aunt in South Florida. Mango after mango, seeing who could eat the most. I love mangos and another fond memory I have is of my dad climbing the hugh mango tree across the street from our house to retrieve the biggest, juciest and ripest mangos. Of course, they were ALWAYS at the tip top of the mango tree. Mangos are a "special" fruit. If you have never tried a mango then I believe you are in for the treat of your life. I cannot describe how they taste. They are unique in flavor and everything about them is different. Their taste, their texture, even their seed is unique....I believe this is because they are truely a "fruit of the gods", a gift from the heavens above...Island Princess
